Is Amazon Now A Supermarket?

by Catherine, 7th July 2010

Amazon, once known for being an online bookseller has in recent years branched out into digital media such as DVDs and CD’s, they have taken to selling electronic goods and even clothing, but now they have just announced an addition to the Amazon family.

They have begun to sell groceries. That’s right, food shopping. On Amazon.co.uk there is a little tab at the side that lets you choose grocery items. I know because I tried it as soon as I heard the news.

They are selling organic, wheat free and gluten free products, but they appear to be relying on many third party companies which can mean we as consumers may have to have our orders part shipped with arrival on different days. This can make it awkward for some.
Amazon is offering free delivery on selected products so it could work out that part of the shopping ordered is eligible for free delivery and the rest is not. Obviously Amazon has a few kinks to iron out, but if the rest of the Amazon service is anything to go by they could be on to a winner.

Presumably for those who buy and sell on Amazon on a regular basis and who have money in their Amazon account can use this to pay for their shopping, (although this is something I have not yet tested).

So in theory, you can set up an Amazon account to sell off old or unwanted books or other items, and use the money to buy food. This is an excellent money saving idea. It is worth checking with shoppingvouchers.co.uk to see what money off vouchers or money off codes Amazon currently have and if they can be used in conjunction with the free delivery service then that is potentially a large saving to be made.
