Chinese New Year

If you like many others would rather avoid the Valentine’s Day stampede this weekend, why not celebrate another festival instead. 14th February 2010 sees the start of Chinese New Year celebrations around the world and in the UK, with Chinese communities waving goodbye to the Year of the Ox and welcoming in the Year of the Tiger. displays, street parties, performances and the chance to try you hand at Chinese arts and crafts.

Manchester celebrations take place in Chinatown and Albert Square from 11.00am to 7.00pm on 14 February with Dragon and Lion Dances, art workshops for children, a 175ft long dragon parade, fireworks and much more. Chinatown promises to be bursting at the seams with hundreds of street stalls offering arts and crafts and even free food tasting so don’t have a big breakfast!

Moving up North, Newcastle are also welcoming in the year of the tiger on 14 February at Chinatown on Stowell Street with celebrations running from 11am until 4pm. You can make your own Chinese New Year card and lanterns, take part in a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and soak up the atmosphere with unicorn processions and kung fu demonstrations.

If your diary is full of breakfast in bed, romantic walks in the park and candlelit dinners for two on 14 February, never fear! You can still get involved with Chinese New Year and head down to Liverpool on 21 February to celebrate with one of the largest Chinese communities in Europe. Another free day out, Liverpool Chinatown will have something for all ages and from 11.00am to 4.00pm.

If you live near the capital then Central London has plenty to offer on 21 February, celebrating the Year of the Tiger from 12.00pm to 6.00pm on Sunday 21 February with yet another free event packed full of exciting activities for all the family.

These are just a snapshot of what’s going on around the country and most Chinese communities are welcoming people to celebrate the Year of the Tiger for free at their street parties and festivals.
