Can Vitamins Improve Memory Function?

by Catherine, 8th September 2010

It is believed that vitamin supplements can help with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia by improving a person’s memory. A study undertaken by Oxford University researchers has shown that Vitamin B, particularly B6, B9 and B12 taken regularly can improve memory loss by up to 500 per cent.

For those interested in the technical reasons, apparently homocysteine which is naturally occurring in the body is linked to memory loss and high levels are found in those that suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s both well known to cause memory loss. The vitamin B supplement is known to break down this homocysteine, so a group of researchers got together to test the theory.

After collecting together 270 pensioners suffering memory problems, they got to work giving half the real vitamin supplement, and the other half took a placebo, or a pretend supplement that had no active ingredients. Subsequent tests showed that brain shrinkage linked to memory loss was slowed by on average 30 per cent. Additional tests are being carried out on those with full on dementia and Alzheimer’s but the outlook is positive.

Now before you all go trying to find where you left your purse so you can rush off to buy some vitamins, it must be stressed that taking vitamins to treat any medical ailment should only be done under doctors’ advice. Making the doctor aware of any supplement being taken is wise as some can have adverse effects on chemical medications currently being taken or maybe needing to be taken in the future.
